The Parliament on Wednesday approved Maldives’ bid to join the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu decided to submit a proposal seeking the approval of the Parliament for the Maldives to join IAEA during a cabinet meeting on September 1.

The legislative assembly provided its backing for the proposal with a unanimous vote of 61 on Wednesday morning.

Back in September, the then-Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer said the Maldives was joining the IAEA because it would make it easier to get funding for the planned project to build a designated cancer hospital in the Maldives.

Zameer said at the time that Maldives and Bhutan are the only countries in the region that have yet to join the 178-member IAEA.
