Will continue to work with Maldives to strengthen democracy: Alistair Burt

United Kingdom’s Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Alistair Burt has said that the UK will continue to work with Maldives to strengthen democracy and build lasting institutions.

Alistair Burt said this in a tweet made through his account last night.

His tweet was made following a meeting with former president Nasheed and leaders of his party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The meeting was held in the MDP office.

MDP has revealed that former president Nasheed and leaders of the party has indeed met with Alistair Burt, and also with UK Deputy High Commissioner to the Maldives and Sri Lanka Robbie Bulloch yesterday.

The party said that the issues discussed summed up the need for the upcoming presidential election to include candidates of all political parties, and also the need to establish a transitional arrangement with international observers prior to the elections.

Alistair Burt also stated on twitter that the way forward for the Maldives to have free and fair elections in which all parties are allowed to contest.
