Bangladeshi national, Jahangir Alam, who was arrested on suspicion of stealing over MVR 400,000 from under the seat of a motorcycle has denied the allegations at Criminal Court, adding he only took a raincoat and a bag of fruits.

Jahangir was arrested for stealing over MVR 400,000 from under the seat of the motorcycle on September 14th. His remand has been extended by the Court following the expiration of his initial remand.

At a hearing held at the Criminal Court on Thursday regarding the extension of his remand, Police had submitted evidence which supports he had committed the theft. The Court said the CCTV footage submitted in this regard, showed Jahangir taking something from under the seat of a motorcycle.

However, Jahangir’s lawyer said he did not steal money from under the seat of the motorcycle but a raincoat. The lawyer identified the bag he is taking inside the home of his second wife as a bag containing bananas and dates.

The court order extending his remand read that the footage showed him removing items besides a raincoat from under the seat of the motorbike and that his actions during the process suggested there was something else.

It was noted that despite the defense claiming the bag taken to the home of Jahangir’s first wife had been blue colored, Police have said the bag was not blue and its content had not been bananas.

Since the investigation is not yet complete, the Court extended his remand by an additional five days which is set to expire on Tuesday.
