Weather worsens ahead of school reopening

With the second academic term of the year scheduled to begin on Sunday, Maldives has once again started experiencing bad weather conditions.

The Maldives Meteorological Center (MET Office) on Saturday evening reports Maldives will experience heavy rainfall, thunder and gusts up ot 40 miles per hour.

Wind speeds are expected to rise to 18 miles per hour from West-Southwest.

Major parts of the country is expected to experience the same weather conditions.

The weather forecast authority had also issued a white alert on Saturday evening, effective from Kaafu to Laamu atolls between 21:00hrs and 02:00hrs.

With Maldives expected experience heavy rainfall and thunder amid the white alert period, MET further forecast similar weather conditions from Sunday afternoon onward.

MET further forecast seas to be moderately rough, with sea swells expected between three to six feet in height.

The authority has already cautioned the public to take safety measures during their travels, especially by sea.

Meanwhile, officers of the Maldives National Defence Force's (MNDF) Fire and Rescue department have been dispatched to drain rain floods from the roads.

Although MET said that while the current rainfall may not stretch for too long, the wet season will be consistent until December.

MET also said Maldives will experience more rainfall this year during its earlier forecast.
