Drifting body near Usfasgandu identified as Maldivian man

Maldives Police Service has identified the drifting body discovered off Usfasgandu area in Male’ as a Maldivian man.

Police, in a message to the media, said the sighting of a dead body at sea was reported to the authority at approximately 17:06pm on Monday evening.

They identified the deceased as a Maldivian man; Ibrahim Jauhary, 62, H. Velasfaru, Male'. 

Officers were deployed to the scene upon receiving the report, said the Police, adding the body was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) following retrieval from the sea. Citing the hospital, Police said Jauhary was declared dead on arrival.

Jauhary, known to the public as Jaufar, was a former MDP activist who was heavily involved in the party's early days' reform works. 

A video viral on social media shows a Police officer and another individual retrieving the body from the sea.
