Authorities probe death threats on President

Maldives Police Service has begun investigation into death threats made against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The threats were made on a Facebook live of President Muizzu's remarks during a side-line event at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Shifan, in relation to this, confirmed on X the law enforcement authority has launched investigation "into the serious threats" made against Muizzu.

Police however, did not provide further details on the matter.

The threats originated from a Facebook account by the name of Ablor Myad Yosef.

While President Muizzu has received death threats publicly, former presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Yameen Abdul Gayoom had been targets of assassination attempts; an attempted stabbing and a speedboat explosion, respectively.

Additionally, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's motorcade was once interrupted by an assailant.

President Muizzu is currently in the United States to take part in the UNGA held in New York.
