The Maldives National Party (MNP) has called out for a ban on tobacco and vape products, supporting the same called out by the Maldives Medical Association.

In a statement released by the medical association, said one of the biggest issues both the Maldives and the globe faced is the increase in non-communicable diseases.

The association in its statement said usage of tobacco products increased the chances of contracting noncommunicable diseases as per research, and called for immediate steps to counter import of such products.

MNP, sharing the association’s statement on X, highlighted this call for a ban on tobacco products reflected the importance of preemptive action to curtail the negative impact of tobacco and vape products.

The party said it believes this was crucial to ensure safety and healthy lifestyle of the Maldives public.

“Maldives National Party supports this call for a ban since it aims to curb the emergence of chronic and dangerous diseases and promote healthier lifestyle and future for the Maldivian public,” MNP said.

Earlier in September, Maldives NCD Alliance called out for immediate action to ban import of vape and electronic cigarette products. The alliance, on behalf of seven different organizations, had urged relevant authorities to take prompt measures.

The alliance highlights usage of flavors in vape products dampened the actual taste of tobacco, making it appealing to youths. They said due to this, vape products have become increasingly popular among youths, while number of children using these products have begun to increase.

Additionally, the alliance highlighted that a total of 34 countries have already banned import of vape products.
