Maldivian health authorities have registered a rise in cases of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) among children, a contagious virus that causes infections of the respiratory tract.

In a post on X on Wednesday, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said it is closely monitoring the situation, and urged the public to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses, especially among children.

“There is some increase in RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) cases among children. HPA is closely monitoring the situation, we urge the public to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses, specially among children,” said the agency.

Symptoms of RSV includes fever, cough, difficulty breathing, or chest pain.

The HPA urged people experiencing such symptoms to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

“Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve outcomes,” said the agency.

The HPA also urged the public to take preventive measures such as handwashing, respiratory etiquette, and avoiding crowded places.

RSV is a common respiratory virus that infects the nose, throat, and lungs. While it usually causes mild and cold-like symptoms among adults and older and healthy children, infants and older adults may develop severe RSV and need hospitalization.
