President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday, congratulated the president-elect of Sri Lanka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
While congratulating Dissanayake in a post on X, President Muizzu expressed that he is eager on working with the president-elect to further strengthen the historic friendship between the two countries.
“Wishing you immense success in your new role,” Muizzu said in his message, expressing optimism the new presidential era would bring progressive changes envisioned by Sri Lankan people.
The Sri Lankan elections commission officially announced Dissanayake’s presidential victory earlier.
Dissanayake, with a 20-year career at the Sri Lankan parliament, contended against candidates belonging to some of the most influential and powerful families in the country. His closest competitor at the recent election was former president Ranasinghe Premadasa’s son Sajith Premadasa.
Poll results so far indicate a 42.31 percent win for Dissanayake while Sajith secured 32.76 percent of the votes.
The current president, Ranil Wickremesinghe managed only 17.27 percent of the votes, while Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son Namal Rajapaksa was not a popular candidate among Sri Lankan people, securing just 2.57 percent of the votes.
