As someone born different, it has taken a different kind of courage for him to earn recognition and find his place in society.

Ahmed Salim, 35, a native of B. Dharavandhoo, has faced lifelong ridicule and harassment for his appearance.

The eldest of five children born to a Dharavandhoo couple, Salim suffers from dwarfism – a genetic or medical condition causing an unusually short stature.

“I was born different. I faced ridicule and harassment from people during by childhood. But I gained acceptance from people after I grew up and established myself in my career,” began Salim, as he told his life story in an exclusive interview to SSTV.

Salim works at Kiha Beach, the biggest hotel in Dharavandhoo. He spends his time with the tourists who stay at the hotel, making their holiday a pleasant experience.

The good reviews he gets from the hotel’s guests are the highlight of his days.

“Working in guest relations, I am the first person they meet when they come here. I keep a close eye on all affairs related to guests overall. I am with the guests at all hours of the day. I am with them until they sleep,” said Salim, as he passionately explained his work life.

Salim has been with Kiha Beach for the last eight years, starting from when the foundation was laid for the hotel. He sees himself continuing to work there.

The person who he sees as his biggest supporter and the person he trusts most is Yoosuf Nawaal, the owner of Kiha Beach.

Salim said that despite being a stranger to the island, Nawaal treated him like a son.

“The management here is very good to me. They believe in me. I work here because I want to. I will be here working by Nawaal’s side until my deathbed,” said Salim, wiping tears from his eyes.

Outside of his work, Nawal’s passion lies in recreational fishing. He often goes fishing when the hotel’s occupation is low.

Ahmed Salim, 35, spends most of his free time fishing.

“I love going fishing. Either to catch reef fish or to fish using a pole and line. I spend most of my free time fishing. Sometimes I would catch fish that’s larger than me,” Salim laughed as he said this last part.

Salim believes he has found acceptance and recognition from his community. Salim, who has a deep love for the island he was born in, is highly active in community events. He is a regular fixture at various communal celebrations, especially during Eid.

“Practically everyone in this island accepts me. They would call when something comes up. And I do what I can. And I will continue to do so in the future. The people of Dharavandhoo love me. And I love the people of Dharavandhoo,” he smiled as he said this.

Working in the tourism industry, Salim’s biggest goal is to make Dharavandhoo a world-famous tourist destination.

Salim’s life journey is a lesson for everyone. His advices people not to give into sadness, and continue on with courage.

He does not believe a person’s appearance limits them from doing anything they want in life.

What is important is to work hard and work courageously to become successful.

“Life is not a war. It is a beautiful journey. I will climb whatever mountains I need to. I will swim whatever waters I need to. God willing, there is nothing I cannot do,” he said.

Like other young men of his age, Salim wants to find a partner and start a family. He believes that this is the only thing missing from his life – a loving partner.

He believes that he is more than capable of embarking on that new chapter.

Salim plans on continuing doing the work he loves – ensuring that his guests – local and foreign alike - have an enjoyable vacation in Dharavandhoo.

“Anyone who visits Kiha Beach will certainly meet me. Anyone who visits Dharavandhoo too. I am your Salim!”
