Applications open for EC membership with Fuad’s term set to expire

Applications have been opened for the post of a member of the Elections Commission (EC) with the tenure of the Commission’s incumbent president Fuad Thaufeeq set to expire soon.

In an announcement on Thursday, the President’s Office said they are opening applications for EC membership as the tenure of one of the incumbent members is set to expire.

Prospective candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be Muslim
  • Must be a Maldivian citizen
  • Must be 25 years old
  • Must not have been convicted of a crime punishable in Islam in the past five years
  • Must not be an individual who has been elected or appointed to a political post under any law
  • Must not be employed in any other government posts
  • Must not be an individual serving a sentence of over 12 months in connection to a criminal offense
  • If the individual has been sentenced to over 12 months in connection to a criminal offense, five years must have elapsed since the sentence has been served or since the individual has been pardoned

As per the announcement, the President’s Office will be accepting applications between 8:30am and 12:00pm on all working days with the deadline to submit applications is 12:00pm on Monday, September 23rd.

The application form must be submitted alongside the following documents:

  • Candidate’s declaration
  • Completed criminal and debt records, which should have been issued after the date of the announcement
  • Political party registration clearance from EC
  • Candidate’s CV

EC’s regulations bar a member from serving more than two terms. The tenure of Fuad, who is serving a second term, is set to expire in November.
