The local council of HDh. Hirimaradhoo has asked the government to relocate the island’s residents to K. Thulusdhoo.

The request was made during a meeting in Male’ on Monday with Local Government Minister Adam Shareef Umar.

In a post on X following the meeting, Adam Shareef said that council officials told him that the Hirimaradhoo community had decided in favor of migrating to another island.

“And they noted that the people want to move to K. Thulusdhoo,” he added.

Hirimaradhoo Council’s president Mohamed Waheed told Sun that the island’s residents wish to migrate to an island closer to the capital, Male’ City.

He said that they settled on Thulusdhoo due to its close proximity to Male’ City and because the island has plenty of land.

Waheed said that the council has also communicated the request to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who provided assurance that they will be allowed to migrate to Thulusdhoo.

“The Housing Ministry has been directed by the President to implement this decision. Today’s discussions with the [Local Government] Ministry were regarding this,” he said.

Hiriramadhoo has a registered population of 589 residents. However, more than half of the population reside in other islands, most of them in the capital.
