Hulhumale’ Phase II accident: Driver in speeding car walks free

The suspects involved in the accident in Hulhumale' Phase II: The out-of-control sports car rammed into the parked biker, launching the latter into air before he fell a few feet away from impact point.

Ibrahim Ikram, the driver in the speeding sports car that rammed into a parking motorbike at Hulhumale’ Phase II on July 31st, has walked free on Sunday after the High Court overturned lower court’s judgement.

Videos of the incident were captured on CCTV and have been shared across social media, which showed the victim parks the bike on the side of the road to receive a phone call. The car is seen speeding into the road with a sharp turn, but skids on the grass road-splitter, veers out of control and rams into the idle biker from rear.

The biker is tossed into the air from the high-momentum impact and lands on the ground head first.

Both Ikram and Ikramuh-Rahman, who had been in the car at the time of the incident, were ordered to be held in remand until verdict. The other passenger in the car, Jinah Ismail received a lighter 15-day remand from the Hulhumale’ Court initially.

Ikram appealed the lower court’s remand verdict to the High Court arguing he was given remand in the absence of a legal representative.

All three High Court judges who presided over the case on Sunday coincided on overturning the lower court decision, following which, Ikram has walked free.

The High Court judgement on the case read that the lower court’s remand without providing the suspect opportunity to appoint a legal representative, which is a constitutionally guaranteed right, was unlawful.

Justice Mohamed Faisal chaired the bench which included Justices Abdul Maniu Hussain and Hassan Shafeeu.
