Adam Azim, the Mayor of Male’ City on Thursday affirmed taking strict action against illegal construction in the capital city.
At a press conference, Azim highlighted the recent increase in unpermitted construction work in the Greater Male’ area and noted the dangers this posed to the public.
He stated that when these buildings, constructed without permits or through unlawful means, collapse, it causes significant setbacks for the residents.
Building permits are mandatory to ensure the safety and security for the residents, Azim said and added that the construction engineers must regularly monitor the structure during the development phase.
Azim promised strict action against the parties found in violation of laws and regulations.
“We have instructed the [City Council’s] land section to take immediate action and stop any ongoing construction work without permits, whether it requires the intervention of the Housing Ministry, relevant committees, the police, or courts,” Azim said.
The city’s mayor promised to change the image of Male’ City to a more progressive one. He said the city council’s measures aim to ensure public safety.
The capital city consists of several rundown buildings, and construction works in some of them proceed without acquiring relevant permits.
