GA. Kolamaafushi Council has decided to issue land from the island for the first time in nearly two decades.
In an announcement on Tuesday, the council opened applications for 28 plots of land from the island, ranging from 1,500 square feet to 3,000 square feet.
According to the council, Maldivian citizens above the age of 18 years who do not own a plot above 600 square feet or a flat or rowhouse from anywhere in the Maldives, and who meet the criteria set down on the regulations on land issuance from Kolamaafushi are eligible for apply for plots from the island.
Kolamaafushi councilman Riyaz Hussain told Sun that the last time land was issued from the island was 19 years back.
Riyaz said 13 of the 28 plots currently available were repossessed by the council because it remained vacant for a long time.
He said the council has already received at least 26 applications.
Riyaz said Kolamaafushi faces a housing crisis, and expects to receive at least 50 applications.
He said that the applicants who are most in need of land will be prioritized.
Applications can be submitted between 09:00 am and 12:00 pm until September 30.
The council warned that applications that lack any necessary supporting documents will be rejected.
