Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam states K. Kandu’oiy Giri that was utilized by state fisheries company, MIFCO, has been handed over to MNDF.
He made the remark while speaking at a Fisheries Ministry press conference held on Wednesday to brief the media on the latest undertakings of the Ministry.
In this regard, the Minister said Kandu’oiy Giri was handed over to MNDF, for their use, on August 4th. He detailed that the Ministry was in discussions with HDC to allocate space required for fishermen from Hulhumale’ Harbor.
Minister Shiyam, underscoring a factory specific tuna fisheries was operated at Kandu’oiy Giri for over a long period, stressed the factory had nevertheless produced adequate results.
“A huge expense has been incurred. But Kandu-oiy Giri lagoon had not served as a solution to fishermen or tuna fishermen,” he said.
The Minister said the factory run at Kandu-oiy Giri will be relocated to Hulhumale’. He did not provide any details as to when the relocation will take place but assured it will be a facility that is beneficial to fishermen.
He noted that the operations at Kandu-oiy Giri factory received financial assistance from foreign parties.
