National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) states Male’ homes impacted by recent heavy rains recorded MVR 800,000 in damages.

The authority, via a post on X, said they have completed the damage assessment at 37 out of the 41 homes that were observed to have been impacted by the heavy rain and floods in Male’ City, adding the remaining households had informed they did not wish to proceed with the damage assessment.

NDMA said their assessment placed the cost of damages incurred at MVR 800,000.

77 homes across various islands and farmlands and three islands were also significantly damaged during the bad weather spell, noted NDMA.

As per the authority, the assessment forms concerning the damage to homes and farmlands have been received following which they are currently working on valuing the cost of the damage.

Maldives experienced widespread rain over a large part of the country last week. Last Tuesday, 89.4 millimeters of rainfall – which weather experts said was unusually high - resulted in severe flooding in the capital, Male’ City, damaging homes and disrupting transport.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) received 256 requests for assistance due to flooding in houses in Male’. 23 individuals from five families were moved out of flood-affected homes, including 13 children.

The northern Maldives also experienced torrential rain, with at least 20 islands reporting flood damage to homes.

Islands in the HA. Atoll were the worst-hit, with at least six families relocated from flood-affected homes in Hoarafushi, and two families each in Baarah, Kelaa and Ihavandhoo.

While weather conditions have begun to improve, Maldives Metrological Service has warned that strong winds will continue to prevail. Henceforth, seafarers have been urged to heed weather alerts.
