The government has begun demolition and site clearance work of M. Rabeeuvilla, one of the few abandoned buildings in capital, Male’ City.

The building has been abandoned and unattended for years with the structure now fully rundown.

A fire had broken out in the building earlier on April 10th, though no one had been injured. The incident had left the structure in weaker condition. On May 20th, a dead body was discovered from the same building as well.

The structure had been a hotbed for various criminal activities, most notably used by drug addicts.

Following the fire, government discussed with all relevant authorities on demolishing the building to ensure public safety.

Demolition of rundown and unused structures, often to ensure public safety has been a notable initiative of the former government, especially in 2019, when it commenced the demolition of 11 such buildings.
