Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim said on Thursday that the City Council authority will be painting red lines on the corners of high-traffic roads, and parking on these areas will result in immediate towing.
At the press conference on On Thursday, Azim highlighted parking on road and street corners was illegal, but has been a regular practice that has caused public nuisance.
Towing vehicles was not an easy task for the police, and neither is painting no parking lines across the city, Azim added.
“I request from the public to be responsible and park their vehicles in designated zones since the city faces a severe congestion issue. If it disturbs you, then it should not disturb the others,” Azim said.
Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen said the authority will announce measures against those parking on red-line zones next week after discussing it with relevant authorities.
Ameen added that the ministry is now installing pavement bollards to ensure that pavements are used only by pedestrians.
Commissioner of Police, Ali Shujau highlighted illegally parked vehicles near schools, restricting temporary parking for parents dropping their kids off.
“Police is prioritizing towing vehicles [parked illegally] or their removal from these areas,” Shujau added.
The commissioner also said traffic-related offenses need more attention than other criminal offenses in Male’ area currently and urged for public support in solving them.
