Temporary shelter has been provided to the Alifu Dhaalu atoll Hangnaameedhoo local after their house burned down last Friday evening.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on X that a 40-year-old local lived in the house, and their temporary accommodation has been fixed with the island council's assistance.

An official of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) spoke to 'Sun' Online and said the reason for the fire has not been identified by the authority as its officers are not stationed on the island. The island council has said the incident occured owing to an electrical shortage, the officer added.

"For now a place has been rented to provide accommodation for one month," the officer said.

The island council is making assessment to identify the extent of damage.

MNDF previously said the house has been destroyed to the extent of being unhospitable.
