President Muizzu congratulates Bangladeshi caretaker govt’s chief advisor

Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated Dr. Muhammed Yunus on his appointment as the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh.

An interim government was formed in Bangladesh on Monday following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Her resignation came amid mass protests after the Bangladesh High Court decided to reinstate the quota system for government jobs, which allocated a significant portion of these jobs to the family members of freedom fighters.

President Muizzu, via a post on X on Thursday night, congratulated Yunus on his appointment.  

“As a longstanding friend and a close partner, the Maldives wishes unity, peace and prosperity to the people of Bangladesh under his leadership,” he added.

Hasina resigned and fled to India on a helicopter with assistance from the military after protestors attempted to break into prime ministerial residence in Dhaka.

Yunus, 84, a Nobel-winning microfinance pioneer credited with lifting millions out of poverty in the South Asian country was appointed following calls from students to lead the nation.
