The whereabouts of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were unknown on Monday as multiple news reports suggested that protesters stormed the leader's official residence.

Moments before the reports came in, Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, pleaded with security forces to block "any unelected government".

A source close to the embattled leader told AFP news agency that Hasina has left the capital, Dhaka, in the face of mass protests demanding her resignation.

"She and her sister have left Ganabhaban (the premier's official residence) for a safer place," the source said. "She wanted to record a speech. But she could not get an opportunity to do that."

Waker-Uz-Zaman's office had earlier announced that the army chief will address the country on Monday.

"General Waker will address the people at 3:00 pm (0900 GMT)," said Rashedul Alam, an official of the Inter-Service Public Relations, the official spokesman of the military.
