A bill proposing an amendment to the Legal Profession Act seeking to omit the Attorney General from Bar Council’s Executive Committee has been submitted to the parliament on Wednesday.

Ruling PNC’s North Hulhumale’ MP Hussain Shareef submitted the bill on behalf of the government.

According to the bill, it aims to ensure complete independence to the Bar Council in their undertakings and pave the way for representatives selected by legal professionals to oversee matters related to the profession.

With the amendment, the Bar Council’s Executive Committee will only include a president, vice president and members elected by legal professionals.

The bill also includes amendments related to the attestation of documents issued by government offices and registered educational institutions and the attestation of documents issued to Maldivians by diplomatic missions for usage in the respective nations.
