Suspect injured amid arrest, in treatment

A suspect is treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after they were injured when police attempted to arrest them.

Maldives Police Service arrested the individual through a Drug Court order.

Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Ahmed Shifan confirmed the incident, and confirmed the injured suspect is a 38-year-old man.

Shifan further said that the suspect’s family had shared their concerns with the authority regarding the officers’ conduct in making their arrest, and had requested Police Professional Standards Command, National Integrity Commission and Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) to review the incident.

While a suspect has been injured amid arrest on Monday, another suspect was seriously injured at Fuvahmulah City when he was manhandled during arrest. Video of the said arrest circulated on social media platforms attracting public criticism over lack of professional conduct by the officers.

The case is being investigated by police as well.
