Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) has publicized the policy on accrediting journalists and issuing press pass.

In a statement on Monday, BroadCom said the purpose of accrediting journalists was to encourage the provision of high-standard services and establish the qualifications and experience required for individuals working as journalists.

BroadCom also said it was aimed at formulating a registry of journalists working in the broadcasting industry and issuing passes for them.

As per the Commission, for accreditation, individuals must, at the minimum, have obtained a level three certificate from broadcasting and communication or related field and have at least three years of experience in the field.

A training program must be completed ahead of accreditation. It will cover the following areas:

  • Code of practice for broadcasting
  • Protection of children’s rights when broadcasting
  • Protection of women’s rights when broadcasting
  • Guideline on covering natural disasters and tragedies
  • Guideline on covering protests and situations of unrest
  • Guideline on broadcasting political content during elections

A fee of MVR 100 will be charged for the program. The press pass issued upon completion of the program will be valid for five years.
