The Democrats have submitted a case the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) seeking to investigate the death of Mohamed Jameel, the inmate who was recently found dead in a Maafushi Jail cell.
The party, in a statement released on Sunday said, Jameel had multiple bruises on his body, while many accuse Maldives Correctional Service officers, who manage the prison, had beaten and neglected Jameel's treatment.
The Democrats requested HRCM to investigate for culpable parties and if officers had beaten the inmate. The party also requested to inquire if Jameel received all the legally ensured medical treatment and attention during his incarceration.
Jameel, who was remanded until sentencing, died at the prison last Friday.
Maldives Police Service earlier said that the bruises on Jameel's body were rigor mortis, and not from any beating.
At Saturday's press conference held by the Minister of Homeland Security Ali Ihusan, along with Police and Correctional Services, police said it would update HRCM as the investigation progressed.
Police also said the decision to not conduct a post mortem was arrived after seeking counsel from relevant authorities.
