A speedboat berthed near Male' City swimming track sustained severe damages after catching fire on Thursday early hours.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) said they received report of a fire engulfing a berthed vessel in the south channel around 00:42hrs.

MNDF dispatched its Fire & Rescue fire fighters to control the situation. The fire fighters extinguished the flames around 00:56hrs on the same night.

The authority also confirms there were no injuries in the incident.

Pictures now circulating on social media showed the fire had originated in the vessel's engine, but a cause is still unclear.

Fire incidents are reported across greater Male' area occasionally, with some of them leading to more devastating results.
