Maldives National University (MNU) has announced seeking a member to the vacant position in its council.

The national university is seeking a member specializing in Fisheries, Ocean Sciences, and Agriculture to its council, which is the university's premier administrative body - consists of eight members, all of whom are appointed by the Minister of Higher Education.

MNU on Saturday made the announcement, seeking a member for the vacant position. The university had provided eligibility criteria of the members, one of which mandates the member should not have a family member in the university's work force, nor in a competitor university of college.

The council members receive a nominal allowance of MVR 1,000 for their attendance to each meeting, whether it is a sub-committee level one.

Interest applicants are required to submit a signed CV and an ID Card copy before 12:00hrs on June 13th, 2024.

The members are appointed to the council from a list of nominees shortlisted by a nomination committee.

Earlier in December, Ministry of Fisheries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with MNU to establish a Fisheries College, as part of the university's expansion efforts for comprehensive academic options - MNU recently announced courses under the college are set to begin in August this year.

Establishment of a college dedicated on academic courses in fisheries is among the chief pledges of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who announced it while speaking at the ceremony held to commemorate the 43rd Maldives Fishermen's Day.

Despite fisheries sector being one of the oldest economic industries in the Maldives, higher education scope in the field in Maldives is limited.
