Govt organizes Independence Day activities

The Director General of Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Athika Ibrahim on Saturday has revealed the government has planned mulitple activities for this year's Maldives Independence Day.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu earlier announced this year's Independence Day slogan; "Maldivians' own nation, Maldivians' freedom."

Maldives celebrates its independence on July 26 every year.

Athika had shared details of the activities planned to commemorate this year's independence day, which include the presidential couple's official meeting and the awarding ceremony for long-serving government employees.

Additionally, a flag hoisting event has been scheduled for which the public will be invited as well.

Athika further revealed an essay writing compeition for the students, while they are set to present four items related traditional sporting activities including lancing, as well as an art competition. A special assembly has been planned in all local schools to celebrate the independence day as well.

The independence day celebratory activities set to commence on July 26 will run until July 31, 2024.

Other activities scheduled during the celebratory period include military celemonial and maritime parades by the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), along with Fly Past and a parade led by student cadets.

Besides this, a special drama is slated for launch along with a "Minivan Dhuvun" (Independence Run) activity, an entertainment show of local talents and a special eve for elderly citizens.

Celebrations will further include a film festival and commemorative activities at the embassies as well.

Athika revealed planned initiatives including the 'Minivan Kaanivaa' (Independence Carnival), drone show, fire works, and a special sale named 'Minivan Sale' (Independence Sale).

At the press conference held by the Culture and Heritage Ministry on Saturday, Athika further confirmed festivities in three islands to celebrate this year's Eid-Al-Adha as well.
