PNC wins four out of six by-elections

Ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has secured wins from four out of the six by-elections held on Saturday, to elect members to the vacant council positions in six local islands.

The by-elections held on Saturday include;

  • H.A. Thakandhoo - election for the female council member's position
  • H.A. Utheemu - election for the council's vacant position
  • N. Landhoo - to elect member for vacant council position
  • N. Velidhoo - to elect member for vacant council position
  • R. Innamaadhoo - to elect the female council member
  • M. Maduvvari - election for the vacant council president's position

Preliminary results showed PNC secured four of these council seats, which include Utheemu, Thakandhoo, Velidhoo and Innamaadhoo.

The main opposition MDP, secured Landhoo council's seat while The Democrats secured Madduvari council's vacant seat.

By-elections for local councils and Women's Development Committees (WDC) have increased owing to frequent resignations by its members. Although a pressing matter, the issue remains without an addressed solution.
