Authorities find teen who traveled to Male’ on stolen boat

A teenager accused of stealing a speedboat owned by Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa Maldives, a resort located in Meemu Atoll, to visit his girlfriend in the Maldivian capital, has been found, according to the local council of the island where the 14-year-old boy is from.

The council president told Sun on Wednesday night that the boy was found “about half-an-hour ago.”

He did not provide further details.

The police have yet to make a comment on the latest development.

In an earlier interview, the council president told Sun that boye ran away from his home on Wednesday morning. He was suspected of stealing the boat after both he and the boat, which was docked at the island, disappeared.

“And some of the island’s residents also witnessed him leaving,” he said.

A local who spoke to Sun alleged the boy travelled to the capital to visit his girlfriend, who lives in Hulhumale’.

He also alleged that the boy left home with his mother’s cash card, phone and some clothes.

A police spokesperson confirmed a speedboat was reported missing from an island in Meemu Atoll on Wednesday.

The boat was later found in the lagoon area off the MTCC ferry terminal in Hulhumale’, said the spokesperson.

The case is under investigation by the police.

Some of the locals who spoke to Sun reported that the boy was smart and does well in school.

One source said the boy’s father drives dinghies, and the boy is therefore familiar with driving boats himself. He said that the boy has been found in Male’.
