President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday, announced the decision to relocate planned airport project in Raa atoll Beriyanfaru to Fainu of the same atoll.
An airport development project in Beriyanfaru was first announced by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who announced the plan officially in June last year. Relocation of this airport was an important pledge of Dr. Muizzu during his campaigning.
Airport development in Fainu is a developmental initiative planned first during former President Abdulla Yameen, which President Muizzu on August 30th, last year, said would be followed through.
During Solih's administration, government sought a contractor for a projec cost of USD 23.6 million for the airport's development as well.
Solih said his government was motivated for the project owing to lack of domestic aviation infrastructure in the atoll.
