PPM has condemned the unlawful summon of Gaumee Party’s Deputy Leader Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed to the Police, and the arrest of Sandhaan Ahanmaidhy.
Speaking at a news conference held at the PPM Office yesterday, the party’s spokesperson Dhunya Maumoon said that the summons and arrests were made in order to intimidate and threaten these individuals, and called the government to stop arresting and threatening people who criticize the government.
“We call for an end to the intimidation and warnings issued to the media, and also for the government to respect and work for the basic principles of democracy,” Dhunya said.
She expressed concern over the efforts made to intimidate the media ever since President Nasheed assumed the post of President, especially since he himself spoke of the absence of the right to freedom of speech in the Maldives to international media several years ago.
“People talk about the previous government’s actions in various ways. I would say that the previous government never arrested or punished anyone outside of what was allowed by the Constitution,” Dhunya said.
Dhunya also called for the international community to monitor closely the actions of the current government, and for human rights groups to work for the rights of the people who are arrested unjustly.
