State Electric Company (STELCO) has cautioned the public over recent surge in electricity usage.
STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy, taking to X, said the year's Ramadan has coincided with the hottest period according to the Meteorological Center.
He further highlighted electrical usage generally increases from standard levels during Ramadan, and said statistics corroborated this as well.
"Statistics show the usage of an average of 94 megawatt in electricity output in Greater Male' region, however, currently 104.7 megawatt of electricity is used in the region," Fahmy said.
Fahmy advised public to reduce and economize electricity usage by households.
Utility consumption, including water and electricity, increases from standard usage levels during Ramadan every year, prompting utility providers to repeatedly issue instructions on economizing.
As a countermeasure, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu earlier announced utility bills will be capped, ensuring it does not exceed beyond a specific limit.
Earlier on March 04th, President Muizzu revealed that the state was engaged in discussions with STELCO, Fenaka Corporation, and MWSC to achieve this; and added the companies have already complied.
According to MET Office, Maldives will experience its hottest period during March and April 2024. The authority forecast an above average temperature rise, a limbo in humidity rates, and lack of cloud formation during the period.
