Zakat House begins accepting zakat

Zakat House has begun accepting Zakat (Islamic mandatory charity).

A statement from Zakat House said it has started accepting zakat or charity given by financially-able individuals from Monday onward. 

Elderly and non-tech-savvy donors can visit Islamic Center's hall to donate Zakat.

For those wishing to pay online, Zakat House has facilitated multiple options, including;

  • Dhiraagu App/Dhiraagu Pay and SMS
  • Ooredoo m-Faisaa and SMS
  • Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB)'s FaisaMobile and FaisaNet
  • Bank of Maldives (BML) digital suite
  • FahiPay
  • Bandeyri Pay

Zakat House added interested and able donors can send Zakat through Bandeyri Pay until the end of Ramadan.

Special hours have been set to accept Zakat through the Ministry of Islamic Affairs during the last 10 days of Ramadan, which has been annouced as public holidays.

As such, the hours for the ministry to accept Zakat in Ramadan are;

  • From 09:00 to 13:00 on weekdays
  • From 11:00 to 14:00 everyday, except on Fridays, during last 10 days of Ramadan

The minimum threshold or 'nisab' for Zakat is the rate of 2.4 kg rice. The rate for normal rice is MVR 12, for Thailand rice it is MVR 70, and for basmati rice, MVR 70 as well in Greater Male' region.

For other atolls, donors need to pay the rate at which 2.4 kg of rice is sold in their respective islands. Outside of Greater Male' region, Zakat will be collected from the respective council authority in that island.
