Pres vows developing Naifaru as Urban Center

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday, has pledged to develop Lhaviyani atoll Naifaru as an urban center of central Maldives.

He said this during his visit to Naifaru, as part of his ongoing tour of the Maldives. 

Development of integrated zones in both south and north, and the establishment of urban centers in seven different areas of the Maldives is a key economic policy of President Dr. Muizzu.

According Dr. Muizzu, the urban centers will provide the highest standard of, all the necessary services to the public.

"The health facility of an urban center will not be a single health center, but a medical institution capable enough with providing family therapy for persons with disabilities and their relatives. Education will be of the highest standard, and roads will be developed. Every other service will be top notch as well," the president said.

At the rally in Naifaru, Dr. Muizzu reiterated his administration's pledge to increase land area by reclaiming 45 hectares.

The reclamation project is already underway, with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) contracted for the initiative in August 2020. So far, MTCC has reclaimed 20.95 hectares of land.

Dr. Muizzu also reiterated to initiate the 400-housing unit project to resolve the housing issue Naifaru faces.

With 26 fishing vessels, the island's primary economic activity is related to fisheries, which president said will be boosted when he promised an expansion of the existing harbor.

He also promised to develop the roads and establish an Islamic Center in the island, both as part of the pledges made to Naifaru during his presidential campaign.

While he is currently in Lhaviyani atoll as part of his ongoing tour across the Maldives to meet local authorities, Naifaru island council is the 150th authority Dr. Muizzu met to discuss ongoing initiatives of the state.
