MTCC starts collecting GST from its transport services

Maldives Transport and Construction Company (MTCC) has started imposing GST on their ferry and bus services.

The company now charges MVR 3.18 per ticket to Vilimale’ and MVR 5.30 for a ticket to Hulhumale’. An amount of MVR 21.2 is charged for their inter-atoll island to island ferry service, and MVR 53 for a ferry trip to Male’. Their Hulhumale’ bus fees have increased to MVR 2.12.

MTCC Transport Executive Ismail Farig told Sun Online that as a registered company at Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), the company is required to collect GST.

“It is not that we have increased the prices of our services. We have just added the GST 6 per cent to our services. As such, GST will be collected from ferries from Hulhumale’, Vilingili, Gulhee Falhu, Thilafushi and province ferries as well as Hulhumale’ bus services,” said Fariq.

The Goods and Services Tax was introduced in 2011 and the rate was increased to 6 per cent on January of last year. Tourism GST has now been increased to 8 per cent.
