Maldives launches 24/7 mental health helpline

Health Ministry has launched a 24/7 national mental health helpline to support people with their mental health and psychosocial wellbeing.

The helpline was launched by Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu in a ceremony held at the Health Ministry on Wednesday. The ceremony was also attended by Health Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, and other top health officials.

The helpline number, 1677, can be reached anytime for mental health support and assistance.

Aishath Samiya, the Permanent Secretary at the Health Ministry, noted the prevalence of people suffering mental health issues in the Maldives.

According to Samiya, a recent survey shows one in five Maldivians suffer from mental health issues, while one in 20 engage in self-harm or have suicidal thoughts.

She said that it makes the national mental health helpline all the more crucial.

Samiya said the main goal of the helpline is to ensure that people have the support they need 24/7.

“The main goal of the mental health helpline is to have a designated number that people of all ages who suffer psychological distress can reach out to at any time,” she said.

Samiya said that in addition to mental health first aid, people who reach out via the helpline will also receive assistance to resolving the issues they face, information, and referrals for relevant services in accordance with set policies.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Rafiu said that having someone to talk to and share their distress with will be of great help.

“Having someone to talk to when one feels mental distress and isolation due to the various challenges in life will offer courage to face and overcome such challenges,” he said.

Minister Khaleel said the helpline will be a crucial service to support people facing mental distress.

He called the helpline a “friend” to people suffering mental health issues.

“If you are experiencing anxiety and distress, then this is your friend,” he said.
