Maldives Customs has begun using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for its undertakings.

The service was launched during a function held on Monday to mark International Customs Day by Maldives Airport Company Limited (MACL)’s Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef.

Customs reported that AI will be used to categorize import and export goods which will cut down the time presently incurred to declare goods and complete documentations concerning goods.

Speaking at the ceremony, Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed described the enhancement of Customs’ services for businesses in response to the changes to the global supply chain as something that would improve the nation’s economy.

Monday’s ceremony also saw the launching of Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) service.

AEO, introduced by World Customs Organization (WCO), is aimed at providing special services for parties involved in import and export of goods and has been noted by a national customs administration as an entity that has maintained a clean record with respect to transactions.
