Those summoned for CNI report investigation may

The Speaker of Parliament has been urged to arrange security for the seven people summoned to the Committee on Oversight of the Government in relation to the investigation of the report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), as they may be exposed to threats.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) holds majority at the committee that is currently investigating the CNI report. Committee Chairman Ali Waheed said that the committee has noted that the people who are summoned may be exposed to threats in relation to the information that they provide committee, and thus decided to advise Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid to arrange and provide security to those people.

“We have already sent the report on this issue to the Speaker. We have said that they may be exposed to threats in the society due to the information they provide to the committee. So they want security. The decision will be made by the Speaker. Security has been provided on previous occasions upon the Speaker’s request,” he said.

Ali Waheed said last night that Superintendent Mohamed Jinah, who had been dismissed from Police Service, had personally requested the committee to arrange security for him, and that the Speaker had been informed of this request. Ali Waheed said that the committee will make a decision on the matter based on the Speaker’s decision.

While speaking at last night’s press conference, Ali Waheed made some allegations against Parliament Speaker Abdullah Shahid and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim. He said that the current work was described as the most threatening, most extraordinary and most distressing work undertaken by the parliament until now, based on how the parliament leadership might act.

“They would know the employees, arrangements and systems of this place. The Speaker takes that responsibility. And in his absence, the Deputy Speaker. Considering all these factors, I said on day one that it is worrying,” he said.

Ali Waheed said that based on the information given by the people who have been summoned to the committee, he is concerned about the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament. He raised the question of who they are, before abruptly concluding the press conference.

Meanwhile, Madaveli MP Mohamed Nazim has said that the X and Y mentioned in the report by former Human Right Minister Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed refer to Members of Parliament. The report, entitled ‘The Silent Inquiry’, says that X was involved to a great extent in the change of former President Nasheed’s government, and that X has said that there are people who are prepared to murder Nasheed; while Y is the person in charge of monitoring the state independent institutions.

Six people have so far been summoned to the committee for the investigation of the CNI report. They are former Head of Police Intelligence Department Mohamed Hameed (MC Hameed), Head of MNDF Intelligence Department Brigadier General Ahmed Nilam, former Police Commissioner Ahmed Faseeh, former Head of Police Drug Enforcement Department Mohamed Jinah, former Human Rights Minister Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed, Brigadier General (Rtd) Ibrahim Didi and Colonel Mohamed Ziyad.

Former Chief of Defence Force Moosa Ali Jaleel will be summoned to the committee tonight.
