President: Elect Azima, without putting an obstruction between govt. and Male’ residents

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Friday, urged to vote main ruling PNC’s candidate Aishath Azima Shakoor who is contesting the Male’ Mayoral by-election with his full support instead of electing a candidate who will become an obstruction between Male’ residents and the government.

In a video message delivered regarding tomorrow’s by-election while based in China – President Muizzu said his administration has presently commenced multiple initiatives to address major issues faced by the Male’ residents.

“Many works I wanted to commence when I held the post of Male’ Mayor with the support and trust of the beloved residents; we have given the chance for council to carry out such works that, back then, the council did not receive cooperation on a government level, for,” he said.

President Muizzu stressed that the bitter experiences of the past will be repeated if a candidate who is against the policies of the government is elected. Citing this as his concern, he expressed confidence that Male’ residents will not make such a decision.

Underscoring Male’ residents should elect a mayor who will act as a link between the government and the residents, President Muizzu described PNC’s candidate Azima as such an individual.

“Candidate number three, Azima Shakoor, has my full confidence in this,” he remarked.

Speaking further, President Muizzu noted that the municipal services of Hulhumale’ have been shifted to Male’ City Council. In this trajectory, he said Hulhumale’ residents will also feel the adverse impacts if a Male’ mayor who is against the government is elected.

He also urged Vilimale’ residents to elect Azima to allow the government-initiated projects in the district to proceed.

Male’ Mayoral by-election alongside the by-election for three vacant seats in Male’ City Council is scheduled for Saturday.

Candidates contesting for Male’ Mayor include PNC’s Azima, MDP’s Adam Azim, The Democrats’ Saif Fathih, former police commissioner Hussain Waheed who is leading efforts to form PNC, the new political party spearheaded by former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom and independent candidate Shuaib Ali (Furahani Shuaib).
