Kulhudhuffushi-bound boat runs aground; passengers rescued

A boat carrying 58 people from Male’ City to Kulhudhuffushi City has run around on a reef near an island in N. Atoll.

According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the boat ‘Bahaadharu’ ran around on a reef off N. Dhekananfaru at around 02:30 am Wednesday.

The boat was carrying 58 people; 10 crew members and 48 passengers – including six women and six children.

The MNDF Northern Area Command’s Coast Guard First Squadron was deployed on Harbor Craft 116 to assist the boat.

17 passengers were taken to Sh. Komandoo on Harbor Craft 16 at around 06:08 am, while the remaining 31 passengers are travelling to Kulhudhuffushi on ‘Flying Fish 17’.

The 10 crew members remain on the boat.

MNDF said they are working on refloating the boat.
