Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that politically motivated assaults and unrests have to be stopped.
Yesterday was the 5th anniversary to the day an attack was attempted on the former president with a knife by a man in a crowd of people gathered to welcome him in Haa Alif Hoarafushi.
A tweet by Maumoon yesterday said that 5 years ago yesterday, an attempt was made on his life in Hoarafushi and that last October, Ungoofaaru MP Dr. Afrasheem Ali was murdered and that political violence must be stamped out.
Regarding Dr.Afrasheem’s murder, the Police have said that the crime was planned in advance and that it was orchestrated by politicians. Police have not however revealed the identities of the politicians stating that investigation is still ongoing.
Police have said that MVR 4 million was proposed to gangs in Male’ to murder Dr. Afrasheem and that they had arrested two people involved in proposing the money. One of the two is known to be Abdulla Javid, the son-in-law of MDP Chairperson and Hulhu-Henveyru MP Reeko Moosa Manik.
The police have forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office the cases of two people believed to be directly involved in the murder. More people have been arrested regarding the case.
