The Democrats have decided to intervene in the petition submitted by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to the Supreme Court over the stymied no-confidence motion against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, after the court decided that individual party members cannot intervene in the case.

Democrats made the decision during a council meeting Sunday evening.

At the meeting, Democrats’ parliamentary group leader Ali Azim submitted a motion proposing that the party intervene in the case.

He said that the Democrats have a vested interest in the case, and that the Supreme Court’s judgement will affect the party.

The person who will advocate on behalf of the party will be decided by Democrats’ interim chairperson Hassan Latheef.

Ali Azim told Sun on Sunday that he believes the court rejected the party’s request to intervene in the case because they had applied as individuals.

He said that the party had originally requested for all its lawmakers based in Male’ except for Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla to intervene in the case.

The coalition composed of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) have also requested to intervene in the case.

The Supreme Court is set to hear the case from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Monday.
