System established to monitor vessels that enter Maldivian territory

Maldives Customs Service has established an identification system to monitor vessels that enter and depart from the Maldives.

Chief Customs Officer Ahmed Waheed told Sun Online today that the system will facilitate the monitoring of vessels that are active in Maldivian territory out of the vessels that enter and depart from the Maldives.

“The system will show how the vessel moves, for example its location, routing and position can be monitored,” he said.

He said that vessels active within 30 nautical miles of Male’ can be monitored using this system, and that the system will also be established and used in the Customs Offices in the north and the south in the near future.

This comes at a time when drugs and other illegal products enter the country via its harbours uncontrollably. He said that the system will assist in controlling such traffic, as well as in helping vessels in need.
