Ten people have sustained injuries to various extents after a speedboat, attempting to enter HA. Dhidhdhoo’s lagoon, wrecked on the island’s channel.
Police said the incident was reported to the authority at 7:30pm Friday night. They confirmed that the people aboard the speedboat sustained injuries to various extents.
A bystander who was at the scene at the time of the incident told Sun that the speedboat had traveled to the island from Vashafaru, another island in the atoll. The passengers were identified as individuals traveling to the island to attend a dinner being hosted by the PPM-PNC coalition.
The bystander said 10 people were aboard the speedboat, who were all thrown off board, into the sea, when the speedboat collided with the channel’s boulders. The speedboat had overturned in the incident.
All 10 of the injured are being treated at Haa Alifu Atoll Hospital.
Sun has learned that two of them are in critical condition, while the remaining individuals had also sustained injuries to various extents.
Police officers are presently active at the scene.
They have now hauled the speedboat inside the lagoon, after refloating it.
Northern islands are presently experiencing rough seas in light of rainy weather. Heavy rain has caused the roads of Dhidhdhoo to become flooded as well.
