Parliamentary sitting adjourned due to lack of quorum yet again

Monday’s Parliamentary sitting was adjourned after failure to meet the 22 MP quorum legally required to hold a sitting. 

On Monday's agenda was forwarding the names of two individuals nominated as ambassadors to foreign countries to the relevant standing committee and forwarding the matter of the dismissal of Haa Dhaal judicial constituency's chief magistrate from the post to the relevant standing committee which was put forth by the Judicial Service Commission in addition to the unfinished motions. 

However, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, who presided over the session, said the session could not be held due to lack of quorum.

“I have adjourned today's session because the quorum required to hold the sitting, has not been reached," Eva said.

While there are 87 MPs in the parliament as of present, 22 MPs are required to be in attendance to hold a sitting. 

Many of the current parliament session’s sittings have been adjourned over lack of quorum. A great number of the sittings out of this were correlated to MPs absence at sittings in light of their engagement in campaign for the presidential elections. 

Moreover, the Parliament was previously at a deadlock subsequent to simultaneous no-confidence motions against both the Speaker, Mohamed Nasheed, and the Deputy Speaker Eva; submitted by MDP. 

MDP's PG on Sunday passed a motion to initiate a second no-confidence motion against  Nasheed. 

MDP, who hold the majority in the Parliament, rescinded their motion previously as they needed the support of the Democrats, Nasheed’s political party, in the second round of the presidential elections. However, those discussions bore no positive end, and so MDP decided to resume work to dismiss Nasheed from his position as speaker.
