Elderly man injured in accident identified as ex-minister Ameen’s father, doctors give up hope

Sun has learned that the elderly man injured in an accident earlier tonight was former health minister Abdulla Ameen’s father, Ahmed Manik, and his condition, while serious, doctors have given up hope of recovery.

A family member who spoke to Sun said Ahmed Manik sustained serious injuries to his head. The family member said his pulse continues to drop as he is being treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH)’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The accident took place at approximately 7:50pm on Friday night at Boduthakurufaanu Magu, in front of Oxygen restaurant. Ahmed Manik is also the father of Mohamed Ameeth, the deputy ambassador of Maldives to Japan.

A bystander who was at the scene at the time said the accident was a result of a car colliding with Ahmed Manik's motorbike, from the rear side. 

The bystander said Ahmed Manik’s nose was broken in the accident, and he had lost consciousness.

This was the second accident reported from Male’ area on Friday. Four cars collided in an accident on Hulhumale’ highway Friday evening which disrupted traffic flow on Sinamale’ bridge for about two hours.
