Addu man gets 12-year prison sentence in brother’s killing

Criminal Court, on Wednesday, has sentenced Hussain Mawaz found guilty after he confessed to killing his brother in Maradhoo Feydhoo district of Addu City, to 12 years in prison.

Mawaz confessed to the killing during a hearing of the case held on August 31^st, where he recounted the stabbing in detail. He expressed remorse and said he had repented.

Subsequently, the court found Mawaz guilty on the same day.

The Criminal Court’s judgment on Wednesday is in light of a plea agreement executed between the Prosecutor General’s Office and Mawaz.

Mawaz will be sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison under the agreement. However, Judge Adam Mohamed, who presided over the case, in his judgment, said Mawaz will only have to serve a prison sentence of 12 years, three months and 16 days. 

The judgment also stated Mawaz is required to fast consecutively for 60 days as Kaffarah.

The stabbing, which took place at a home in the Maradhoo Feydhoo district, was reported to the police at 11:38 pm May 31^st.

Ahmed Shuaib, 27, died shortly after he was taken to the Addu Equatorial Hospital.

His brother, Mawaz, was arrested under a court order on June 1^st.

Locals report that Shuaib was stabbed inside his home, and later collapsed on the pavement outside the house.
