First US resident ambassador to Maldives presents credentials

The first US Resident Ambassador to Maldives, Hugo Hue-Ho Yon, has presented his credentials to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The ceremony was held at the President’s Office today.

During the meeting following the ceremony, President Solih and the US Ambassador discussed further strengthening of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

During the meeting, the US Ambassador praised Maldives' efforts to mitigate the damage caused by climate change and the work done to overcome the challenges associated with climate change.

President Solih congratulated the US Ambassador on his assumption of office.

He said the establishment of a US Embassy in Maldives and the appointment of an Ambassador would strengthen relations between the US and Maldives in the future.

In addition, President Solih said the reopening of the Maldivian Embassy in Washington DC is a step forward in Maldives' foreign policy and will create opportunities for strengthening relations between the people of the two countries in trade, economic and other fields. He also noted that embassies play an important role in strengthening economic and cultural ties between the people.

Concluding the meeting, Ambassador Yon thanked President Solih and the Maldivian Government for their cooperation in opening the US Embassy in Maldives. Both Ambassador Yon and President Solih expressed their hope that the relationship between Maldives and the United States will be further strengthened in various fields in the future.

Maldives established political relations with the United States in 1965.

The Maldivian embassy in Washington reopened on June 17, 2023.

Prior to the opening of the embassy, ​​communications between the United States and Maldives were conducted through the US Embassy in Sri Lanka. Maldives is represented in the United States through its mission in the United Nations.

Before this, a Maldivian embassy was opened in the US in 2007.  However, that embassy closed in 2008.
